Market research companies have evolved over the years and primary use the Internet to gather their information. Before the Internet they relied on regular mail and even the phone for gathering up customer feedback on a variety of products and services.
The actual companies them selves use to do their own market surveys and such but as their businesses grew more complex, they found it much easier to outsource this particular function or service.
The purpose of a market research company is multi-facet. One of their functions is to gather information by demographics about certain products or services. They use many methods for doing this but more and more of this information gathering is done on the Internet.
Companies that produce products and or services use feedback from customers to better improve what they are producing. Market Research Companies sometimes will mail surveys to a certain cross section of the population but found that this method wasn't very cost effective. Too many people would just throw the survey away as junk mail or the response that they did receive was far from adequate in determining any cohesive results about the products or surveys. Also the time it took to do the mailings then manually tally up the results was just not very cost effective.
They also tried telephone surveys, which at one point provided some good information on people's buying habits and what they did or didn't like. However, this method also wasn't very cost effective.
This is why most market research companies today rely mainly on Internet marketing to gather up their demographic and customer feedback information, which in turn they use computers to tally, sort put into more cohesive form. They then submit this information to the various companies that they perform this task for so that the company can learn more about their customers and improve their products or services that they provide.
Then it got to the point that unless they offered some kind of incentives to the people they were trying to recruit to take these various surveys, the data they were gathering was becoming incomplete and inadequate.
Thus the whole business of paid surveys came into being. These research companies realized that if they started offering money, prizes, sweepstakes or sample products for people to test, their results would cover a much larger demographic. This would provide much more detailed data that could be boiled down so to speak in valuable consumer information that they could sell to the companies that actually provide the products and or services.
So now scattered all over the internet you will find ads for taking a survey, entering a sweepstakes or fill out a form and they will send you a free sample in return for your feedback on the product and so on.
Just a word of caution, be wary about how much personal information you give out to these various Market or Survey companies. Keep your answers focused on the products and services that they are asking you about and a lot less on your personal information. You always have to remember, that big brother is always watching.
