There are sites on the Internet which are intended to help others who might be in need. Some of the sites represent International organizations which work with children, who are possibly victims of diseases not seen in this country for decades. Many times we lose sight of how fortunate we are. Although drugs which target specific diseases can be expensive for our citizens, in many areas of the world they simply do not exist. It is through some of these sites we are able to provide access to medicines to be as far-reaching as possible. Many will say charity begins at home, however I had always assumed it wasn't intended to stop here as well.
If you choose to stay at home in your efforts to make a difference, might I suggest visiting some of the sites relating to abused women and children. Sadly, there are many. Please don't misunderstand, additional resources are always needed. I was referring to the growing need we seem to have for such websites. These sites commonly make available various types of assistance ranging from therapy to shelters. Unfortunately, in some cases there are no shelter space available. There are areas of the country lacking in the availability of professionals able to treat the victims of abuse. I have no doubt additional funds channeled in the right direction would provide a woman and her kids with a safe place to live.
There are sites which represent Research laboratories. These labs are conducting research on the treatment and cure of many disease our friends and family members struggle with daily. There are also local organizations seeking funds for the care of individuals currently suffering from the illnesses targeted by the labs. Yes, both are in desperate need of funds in order to continue their work. Although the labs will generally receive more funding than the organizations, neither should be excluded from our giving. I would shudder to think of where our nation would be, in regards to our health, had it not been for these labs. On the other hand, there is also an immediate need with which the organizations struggle. It is up to you, the donor, to decide where your gift will do the most good. It isn't an easy decision, but is is one which must be made.
America has long been considered the most generous nation on earth. I firmly believe this will always be true. Our country routinely helps countries which have been victims of natural disasters. I also believe should America stop, it will be America who suffers in the end. No, we cannot do it all. The citizens of our country, you and I, have always given of our hearts and finances to alleviate the suffering of others. And again, I believe it is us who will suffer should we stop. Where should your funds be sent, that is a question only you can answer. Giving must come from the heart. It should go where your heat tells you it is needed. Just be sure to make a difference in someone's life today.
